As February nears, so does the spring musical “The Addams Family,” and the members of the Theater department have worked hard to ensure that the show will provide laughs and cheers from the audience Feb. 22-24. Rehearsals began before Winter Break, and since then, the cast and crew are doing everything they can to prepare.

We rehearse every day after school,” “Addams Family” actress and senior Katie Bohnert said. “Usually on Mondays or at the beginning of the week we have vocal rehearsals, where we practice and learn the songs. The rest of the days we work on acting and blocking. Also on Tuesday nights we have dance rehearsals to learn choreography.”

Outside of school, the actors and actresses must balance their schoolwork with their theater obligations. Though learning lines is a lot of work, Bohnert thinks it is enjoyable.

“Outside of school I have to spend time learning my songs, memorizing my lines,” Bohnert said. “It is as demanding as any other class or homework. But it’s also a lot of fun, it almost never feels like work because everyone really wants to be there and get ready to put on a good show.”

The theater tech crew also must work hard to create scenes and lighting, to ensure quality of sound and to promote the musical. Though they spend their time behind-the-scenes, they also showcase their work.

“I’m the sound board operator for the musical this year,” senior Bailee Koons said. “I’m really excited to have this opportunity again this year and to see how far the actors and the set have come from the beginning.”

For Bohnert, procrastination is not an option because the show must open Feb. 22. Both Koons and Bohnert are looking forward to opening the show.

“There are no deadline extensions or extra help we can get, all of us have to work really hard to get the show where it needs to be, but that’s what makes it exciting,” Bohnert said. “This is my last time on stage in high school, so I am just excited to be able to have a great final experience with my cast and crew.”
