Senior Emma Ewell’s rise to being a top coxswain (responsible for coordinating the power and rhythm of rowers) in the Saint Louis Rowing Club started only seven years ago. Despite the odds, after years of determination and perseverance, Ewell recently committed to being a coxswain for the rowing team at the University of Alabama.

“I was extremely excited considering I had been working for this [for] the past seven years of my life,” Ewell said. “I ran downstairs to my parents, in tears yelling, ‘I’m going to Alabama.”

Although it takes great individual practice and persistence to get the opportunity to row for an NCAA Division I team, Emma insists that her coaches were essential to the success she has experienced. With the knowledge and guidance of her coaches, Ewell has used what she has learned to reach new heights.

“[Trish Milla] is always helping me become the best I can be. Without his help, I never would have made the US Women’s Junior National Rowing Team or win multiple medals,” Ewell said. “He’s been preparing me for the “real world” for seven years now and it has been a great experience.”

Ewell’s hard work and dedication has not only pushed her to her recent success, but it has inevitably rubbed off on other teammates as well. As a leader in the rowing club, Ewell has made it a point to help others such as senior Sophie Taylor.

“Emma has helped me push through the mental toughness of the sport, and overall helped me become a stronger person,” Taylor said.

Although Ewell’s teammates have benefited from her experience, the exchange occurs both ways. Inspired by the support and love she receives from teammates, Ewell is constantly driven to achieve more.

“Everyday in practice, [my teammates] always push me to want to be the best,” Ewell said. “It’s healthy competition and I can’t thank my team enough for always pushing me. I have created such an amazing bond with these girls and words cannot explain how sad I am to be leaving them.”

Ewell’s experience at the Saint Louis Rowing Club has provided her the tools for future success in collegiate level rowing. While her commitment to Alabama was an emotional experience, it comes as no surprise to her former coach.

“It has been a goal of Emma’s to [be a coxswain] in college for quite some time, and I am thrilled that she’s chosen Alabama,” Coach Milla said. “She’s more than ready for the next level and I have no doubt she will do great things there.”
