You know what’s scarier than a clown following you around with a knife? The fact that the nation has less than a month left until Election Day and Donald Trump is one of the candidates running for the highest office in the land: the presidency.
All jokes aside, Trump and his supporters have made a variety of outrageous claims in the past. From President Obama and his “fake” birth records to climate change being a hoax, one would think the release of the explicit tape from 2005, in which he stated he bragged about sexually assaulting women. because he can “do anything”, is the worse thing he could do. But, the hashtag #RepealThe19th popped up on Twitter Oct. 12 after a poll showed that Trump would win if only men were allowed to vote. Of course, anyone with common sense would be outraged by this statement, as denying half of the population the right to choose who represents them is considered inhumane in this day and age. But to no one’s surprise, more and more Trump supporters retweeted and tweeted with the hashtag, saying things like “women aren’t fit for politics”.
The most surprising thing was that some women were in support of the hashtag; in effect, these women are saying that they would be willing to give up the right to vote just to see Trump to win the presidency. Of course, Democrats came in and set the record straight, but just the fact that a conscious voter would even consider repealing a woman’s right to vote– thus stripping them of representation in government– saddens me because it shows women still have a long road to equality in America. We have taken so many steps forward– steps so significant that a woman can now run for president– yet this hashtag feels like a giant leap backward. However, I know that we will bounce back from this, and with the power of our 19th amendment, we will vote ourselves to equality.
